The Technique
This new, innovative and spontaneous way of strip piecing, allows a playful interaction between quilt maker and fabric. It is used to piece a wide range of contemporary one of a kind patterns as well as traditional patterns, including hearts, diamonds, squares, triangles, spirals, intricate geometric designs, and kaleidoscopes. There are no templates involved and these designs require only a see through ruler, scissors and rotary cutter to make. The applications are limitless. The principles are so basic that a beginning quilter can grasp them, yet there is enough diversity to hold a more experienced quilters attention. It is a very free and improvisational technique, encouraging the quilt maker to take risks and explore while creating.
The quilter goes through a series of steps, starting with strips sewn together and made into fabric tubes, which are cut into 'continuous strips'. Which are rotated and sewn to each other, or with other strips, to create different patterns that are cut apart again, in a different way, into more 'continuous-strips' to create patterns that are even more intricate. Tiny pieces will appear that you would have never attempted to cut with templates. Mirror image patterns become easy, opening a whole range of possibilities for kaleidoscopes and symmetrical designs. There is a wonderful element of surprise and serendipity in this technique making it very fun and rewarding.

The Workshops
Workshops will introduce the quilt maker to the concepts of continuous-strip piecing and appeal to quilters of all levels from traditional to innovative. Machine piecers who want to expand their techniques and are looking for a new way to use strip piecing will be interested in this process.
These are confident beginner through expert level classes. Each class focuses on a different concept of this technique. Students must have the ability to skillfully and efficiently rotary cut and sew strips of fabric together. Students can expect to grasp the concept of continuous-strip piecing, being guided through a series of steps to create a pattern and make a small quilt top or complete a series of exercises. There will be encouragement for different variations and levels, which will open up the quilt maker to explore this unique way of piecing and the many options available.
Workshops can be tailored to suit your needs.

Totally Tubular: Squares
Level: Confident-Beginner to Advanced
Class Length: 2 to 5 days [Longer classes will give students more opportunity to experiment with ideas of their own]
Expand your knowledge of strip piecing with this fun new technique. Sew fabric strips into tubes. Cut these tubes into more strips and sew them back together again to create interesting geometric patterns without the use of templates or paper. Different patterns can be made from the same strips. It is very playful and easier than it looks, similar to Bargello but with a Totally Tubular twist. Students will create pieces of 'fabric' that can be turned into a border, block, small quilt, several blocks or trim on a garment. Techniques learned can be used to make traditional or contemporary patterns.
Note: If you would like a project oriented class, this class can be geared to make and learn some variations of the projects and Jacks or Pinwheels (see Gallery 3) from my book Totally Tubular Quilts. [book required]

Totally Tubular: Diamonds
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Class Length: 1 to 5 Days [Longer classes will give students the opportunity to experiment with ideas of their own. More time will be given to color, fabric choices and variations.]
Learn this fun new strip-piecing technique and get over your fear of the bias. Sew fabric strips into tubes. Cut these tubes into more strips and sew them back together again to create interesting geometric patterns without the use of templates or paper. Many variations of patterns can be made from the same strips. It is very playful and easier than it looks. Similar to bargello, but with a diamond twist that is Totally Tubular. Rita will guide students through her process to create pieces of 'fabric' that can be turned into a border, block, small quilt, several blocks or made into a garment. Techniques learned can be used to make traditional or contemporary patterns.
Note: If you would like a project oriented class, this class can be geared to make and learn some variations of the project Rainbow and the Cover Quilt (see Book Page) from my book Totally Tubular Quilts. [Book required]

Totally Tubular: Triangles
Level: Confident-Beginner to Advanced
Class Length: 1 to 5 Days [Longer classes will give students the opportunity to experiment with ideas of their own, color and fabric choices and variations.]
Learn this fun new strip-piecing technique and get over your fear of the bias. Sew fabric strips into tubes. Cut these tubes into more strips and Rita will guide you through her Totally Tubular process for sewing them back together to easily create yards and yards of triangles any size any angle you wish to make, without the use of paper or templates. Explore unique ways to cut and use these triangles to create other intricate geometric designs including flying geese of every angle. Students create pieces of 'fabric' that can be turned into a border, block, small quilt, several blocks or put into a garment. This is a good technique to add to your library of techniques.
